Lead Data Engineer

Permanent | Remote UK | £75,000-£85,000 + 20% Bonus + Excellent Pension

Cedar are supporting a growing organisation undergoing a significant data transformation programme with the appointment of a Lead Data Engineer.

The role forms part of a wider programme to bring greater ownership of the organisation’s data capability in-house and continue the development of its modern cloud data platform.

This is a highly hands-on role offering significant autonomy. You will initially operate as the senior Data Engineer within the business, taking ownership of a platform that has been developed with an external technology partner.

The role

• Take end-to-end technical ownership of a modern cloud data platform
• Take ownership of the existing architecture, challenging and improving it where appropriate
• Design, build and optimise scalable data pipelines and data models
• Work across Lakehouse and medallion architectures, including Bronze, Silver and Gold layers
• Develop dimensional models including facts, dimensions and star schemas
• Own platform reliability, monitoring, performance and incident management
• Establish standards around data quality, governance, lineage and security
• Implement and improve CI/CD and deployment processes
• Work closely with stakeholders to translate business requirements into scalable data solutions
• Manage the transition of knowledge and capability from external suppliers into the organisation
• Longer term, help build and develop the internal data engineering capability

Experience required

We are looking for a genuinely hands-on Senior or Lead Data Engineer with strong experience across:

• Python / PySpark
• SQL
• Modern cloud data platforms
• Data pipelines and ETL/ELT
• Lakehouse / medallion architecture
• Dimensional and star-schema modelling
• Production data platform ownership
• Data quality and governance
• CI/CD and modern engineering practices

Experience with Microsoft Fabric would be highly advantageous but is not essential. Candidates with strong experience across Azure Databricks, Azure Synapse, Azure Data Factory, Snowflake or comparable modern cloud data platforms will also be considered.

The successful individual will be comfortable operating independently, making technical decisions and remaining highly hands-on, while taking broader ownership of the platform.
