Cedar are currently working with an exciting new E-commerce start-up who are currently looking for a General Merchandise Buying Lead to join their team. This is an excellent time to join the business which is experiencing strong growth and backed by several successful venture capital firms and represents an opportunity to have a major impact on the company's journey and direction. This is a great opportunity for a strong senior buyer, purchasing manager or similar to work in a start-up environment where they will have real ownership of strategy and decision-making, in a business that is welcoming, collaborative and has ambitious plans for the future.

Reporting into the Head of Trading, the Buying Lead will be responsible for the overall buying operations and strategy for the General Merchandise range. The Buying Lead will have a team of 2 (1 direct report) and will initially focus on rationalising the supply base and re-organising the product range and continue to grow the revenue of the General Merchandise category. They will have overall responsibility for delivery of customer experience and commercial performance within GM and have significant decision making capacity. Retail and General merchandise experience is essential ideally across a range of categories such as cookware, home-ware, soft furnishings, cleaning accessories, garden goods, pet-care (non food) etc. The ideal candidate will have experience within both large and small companies, preferably with discount retail knowledge and have had line management responsibility. Most importantly, the role requires a self-starter who is enthusiastic about retail buying, entrepreneurial and excited to work in a start-up environment with significant room for growth.

Key responsibilities of the General Merchandise Buying Lead

  • Helping to drive and maintain the business's key USP as a variety discount retailer through defining the General Merchandise range strategy, pricing, events and sourcing.
  • Utilise data analysis to understand customer behaviour and spending trends and to anticipate future needs in order to unlock opportunities across existing and new categories.
  • Work closely with the GM team to build the range and events calendar and then identify and source a market leading range.
  • Manage supplier partnerships to ensure strong commercial strategy and scalability
  • Improve and implement buying and commercial processes
  • Manage and develop junior team members

Key Skills and Experience

  • Experience in a Senior Buyer, Buying lead or similar managerial position within buying (essential)
  • Retail experience (Essential)
  • General merchandise experience (essential)
  • Discount retail experience (desired)

Salary and Benefits

  • £70,000 - £75,000 Basic Salary
