Velodrome Cycling Experience 2016
At Cedar, we’re well known as being obsessive about bikes, so for those that know us well it’s no surprise that we hired the Lee Valley Olympic Velodrome for a third year, sending like-minded CFOs, FDs and finance leaders from some of the UK’s leading businesses hurtling around the track.
The £100m venue was built for the 2012 London Olympic and Paralympic Games. Its 250m track and daunting 45-degree banking was host to the track cycling events where Team GB won nine medals, bettered again this year in Rio with 12. We have to ask what the team might achieve in Tokyo in 2020?
Despite the event being billed as an experience, not a competition, that particular message was a little overlooked by the 30 lucky draw participants as they sought to shave milliseconds of last year’s quickest lap (17.36 seconds) and they did it in style.
With the all-important safety briefing given, training laps completed and a quick time out allowed, the head to heads started. Even our novice guests achieved personal bests they didn’t believe possible, conquering their initial fears of being able to get above the ‘blue line’, a feat some thought impossible when they first arrived.
However, there was no doubt that the winner set a phenomenal time – Nick McNulty recorded a staggering 16.9 seconds – the fastest in the three years. We thought it would be difficult to better previous winners’ Ben MacDonald 17.36 and Matt Briers 17.26, but Nick’s time was significantly quicker.
To put Nick’s time into perspective: at the Rio Olympics Ed Clancy, Steven Burke, Owain Doull and Bradley Wiggins set the 4000m team pursuit world record in 3mins 50 seconds, an average of 14.39 seconds per lap. This is only 2.5 seconds faster than Nick …. perhaps he should reconsider his career in finance and join Team GB to start training for Tokyo in 2020!
Ed Wagener came in second place crossing the line in an impressive 17.87 seconds, just beating Cedar’s very own Managing Partner, Howard Bentwood, who ranked third with 17.92 seconds.
This event was a great opportunity for our guests to have fun and network within a stimulating environment and exhilarating environment. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the fantastic team at the Velodrome and Sportsworld Events for another hugely enjoyable day!

“I was lucky enough to be invited to the event this year and it was an amazing experience. We were off the track before noon, but the rush didn’t wear off until the evening. It was the first time I’d tried track cycling and I was surprised at how easy it was to take to the track, get the legs and adrenaline pumping and generate some real speed. The camaraderie in the group was excellent, despite the competitive spirit that was infecting us all and Cedar looked after us all very well throughout. Super fun activity, great networking opportunities, inspiring environment; Cedar have this one nailed”Stephanie Martin
“What a wonderful opportunity – to cycle in the tracks of some of the greats. Seeing the steep-sided slopes for the first time was a bit daunting but by the time I did the flying lap it was just part of the ride! I can still hear the whoosh of the wind brushing past my face as I cycled the flying lap at 42 km/h. It ended so quickly. I’ll definitely do that again”Maccs Pescatore
“Thank you once again for your kind hospitality today. That was definitely a bucket list experience, and I’m thrilled to have got the chance to do something so iconic”Neil Edwards
